depends what sound your bassist is after.
Ampeg are supposed to be excellent, but dear - did use an ampeg 610 cabinet at a gig and it was monstrous> Had a peavey 70 watt 115 combo that always sounded louder than it should have done, but it was heavy man.
Have an Ashdown ABM 300 and mini 15 cabinet - this is great - loud, portable, articulate and can be paired up with another cab when i eventually get round to it. Bass amps need a lot more power compared wth guitar amps so they can produce the low notes at relatively high volume. most bass amp power ratings are based on using 4 ohm speaker loads (i think), but most popular single cab choice is 8 ohm - i'm guessing this is so you can run two 8 ohm cabs in parallel to get 4 ohms and therefore the highest power available. I only have 1 8 ohm cab so am only running around half of the 300 watts available, but it's still loud enough,

The ashdown mag stuff is supposed to be good value. £200 will get you a second hand 300 watt head and 15 inch cab.
Playing the right notes in the wrong order since 1994

Newbie
I bought my Son a Trace Elliott 130w combo for his birthday, last year.
Looks really good, lights up really nice.
has an eq on the front and has some great sounds.
weighs a ton but its a really good amp.
Cost about £150 off ebay.
he plays an Ibanez thru it and sounds really good.
