epi SG/EB-0/EB-3 - too much mud. Depends what sort of tone you want. Agree that Jazzes are a bit too twangy for metal.

Steve Harris uses a Precision, Lemmy uses a Ric (quite woody and twangy, but he plays chords on his), Cliff Williams uses a Stingray.

Stingray - extremely versatile, really growly if they're set up right, great bass to own and a good investment to boot if you get a cheap enough one.

Precision - great thump and some bargains to be had.

Warwick is another option you might want to look at
Playing the right notes in the wrong order since 1994

I love Warwick and Musicman. I suppose that I am a tad biased as one of my favourite Bass Players uses Both. I love the sound of Rickies and Precision Basses too and still regard the Thunderbird as an exceptional Bass.

By the way...Does anyone know what that Black Monster that Neil Murray uses is? He seems to be using it more or less exclusively these days, whether working in Whitesnake, M3 or We Will Rock You. It has a very distinctive tone and I admit that I am hooked. NOT that I am a Bass Player by any stretch of the imagination.

Another Bass that I am really looking forward to hearing one of these days is a "Goodfellow" Nightingale which a friend is having restored. I should imagine that it will be tremendous. B)
"Drunk" is feeling sophisticated even though you can't say it!

I had an Ibanez bass once. I don't play bass but somebody offered me it for £50, so I bought it. Didn't sound wonderful, especially through my Marshall MG

BUT, I did manage to make quite a profit on it

My Bassist collects and has quite a few really nice basses, my fav is his Dan Armstrong Plexi, my least is his Hofner Violin bass.
It's not about how many notes you play, it's about how many you don't.

Why u play a bass through a MG? XD

someone tried to do that to mine at a gig at school once

i shouted at them slighlty and pointed out high volume bass thorugh it might damage it :P

they were a few years younger and petrified with fear...

i felt bad after..
