Forget modern bands, look at some of the older bands. Bon Jovi being my prime exaple. Even Black sabbath had a keyboardist hidden away somewhere at their gigs (listen to planet caravan by black sabbath and this becomes obvious). If they're not you're style then you don't need one unless you want to hire one for your band for a certain song. |

i'd say that there are a few bands that would disagree and to cite Dragonforce you have alot to learn. try Symphony X and then get back to me. |
| and now for something completely different | |

Symphony X spanks the living crap out of Dragonfarce any day. Musicianship and creative composition FTW! It all depends on your style. Folk, Prog, Power, and Ambient metal bands tend to rely on keyboardists to get their sound, whereas other genres use them from time to time, but don't absolutely need them. @ mynameisDavid: Slipknot = false metal, bro

How is it false metal? Enlighten me, I'm not into cookie monster metal like you are most likely. death metal sucks. 9 minute solos do not entertain me, they bore me. Edited by mynameisDavid, Jan 10 2009, 08:30 PM.

Don't take any of this personally, as I'm just explaining this from the viewpoint of someone who has listened to and played metal all his life. They were a large part of the Nu-metal movement, which, for those of us in the metal community, is shunned for it's dumbed down version of generic hard rock, over processed solo-less guitar work, and it's sole focus on getting a mainstream audience. I'm not trying to sound like a typical metalhead, and say all music needs to be 'tr00' and 'kvlt', but there is a line drawn in the metal culture, as to what is considered metal, and what is considered over processed garbage. Don't have a problem with people liking them. I just have a problem with how much worship they get from the mainstream media, when there are super talented bands that deserve way more credit than Slipknot gets. I'm not a huge fan of Death Metal myself, and even as a guitarist, I like my solos to be within a reasonable time frame. |

Metallica has gone through a steady decline throughout their career. St. Anger is pretty much considered a Nu-Metal album. Bad example there, bro. I never said all mainstream bands suck, but Nu-metal, Metalcore, Deathcore, and genres like these are generally shunned in the metal community. Simple as that. It's all promotion, and very little talent. I like plenty of artists that are considered mainstream, but in the end, what business does some overpaid guy in a suit, sitting behind a desk have telling me what bands belong in which genre? Especially one he knows nothing about. Bands like Sabbath, Iron Maiden, Guns n Roses, Megadeth, Motorhead, Ozzy, etc are more mainstream because they've been around longer, and the older generation has passed this music to their children. |

I like slipknot and lots of other mainstream bands but i do see troys point. Turn to a music tv channel like kerrang or scuss and all you see is sliknot and manson. Both are good artists but i do not think that they are worthy of all the attention they receive and i feel bad for all those amazingly talented artists that are uknown and unheard. To many kids grow up listening to mainstream garbage that is all i'm trying to say. I can't watch tv channels like kerrang and scuzz because they are always full of stupid advertisements and the same 20+ songs on a constant loop...it's depressing that the genre i love so much can be ripped apart and sold to the masses in such a cheap and nasty way. |

You're getting out of topic now. Nope, a metal band doesn't need a keyboard. But, if done correctly, you'll add another dimension to your music. Think like this: Instead of adding the keyboard on top of your music, try to make it BLEND IN with your music. With that I mean, if you make it so that the song becomes weird without the keyboard then you've basically succeeded. If you can remove the keyboard altogether and it bears basically no effect, then you're not approaching it right. It can still work. If you know what you're doing, wrong can be right. BUT, if you want to make things interesting, then make the keyboard a vital part. Additional composition is required to fit it in. Don't just slap it on
