Cliff Burton, his bass solo's match up to electric speed, he was really good
15 years in the academy,
he was like no cadet they had ever seen,
a man so hard his veins bleed ice
when he speaks he never says it twice
the call him judge, last name Dredd
so break the law and you'll wind up dead!!!

Steve Harris and Lemmy are obvious choices.
Jeffrey Hammond from Tull, Dave Pegg from Tull and Fairport Convention.
Rick Savage from Leppard - great vocalist too.

figure i'll mention a couple of guys who don't get much press but are great players

DENNIS DUNAWAY - from the original Alice Cooper band. he has some really cool lines if you take the time to listen.

BURKE SHELLEY - from Budgie i figure this being an UK website some of you might know him. the end of Stranded is awesome not tough to play but sounds cool.

PETE WAY- from UFO.
and now for something completely different

KISAKI (various bands), Ray (Aliene Maφriage, ネガ, others), Jasmine You (雀羅, HIZAKI grace project, others), Tsunehito (SCISSOR, D).
I think those are my top four right now. Japanese guys so I doubt anyone cares. :)

John Myung in place of Victor Wooten, though countless bassists deserve respect and I love Sting's music though not really obsessed with his playing
