Hi, new here so.. Yeah..

I'm looking to get my first Effects Pedal this christmas.
I've been playing Guitar for about a year now self taught.
I really know nothing about what i'm buying & the best UK sights to use.

I will not order from abroad.

So, can someone point me in the right direction? Reliable sites & good makes/models.

Zoom G2
That's what's been recommended to me by a friend, he uses the Non-USB version of it.

Thanks in advance.

Well.. Line 6 POD are pretty cool, they range from about £100-£300 i think the basic POD 2 should be in your budget, but it's not a pedal, it's a desktop modeler. If you want an actual stomp box type multi effect unit the Boss ME-50 is around your price range or the ME-20 is a little cheaper but without so much to offer. In my experience Multi effects are never as good as a dedicated effect, but i've used a Boss GT-8 in the past and it's very very useable and impressive for the money it costs, i shouldn't think the ME-50 would be much different apart from having less features.

Actually I like the Zoom, Affordable, Great sounding, and you can save money to buy a guitar/amp

I'd only go for a used POD though.

Zoom makes decent stuff. you still haven't really said what your looking for soundwise. while multi-fx units do offer alot of options you may find that a couple of stand alone fx will give you the sound you want. Korg also makes acceptably good units for cost contious buyers. i have an older one and if used just for and effect or two here and there its fine. as a rule i wouldn't use them to get my distortion from.
and now for something completely different

more on standalone pedals actually, you could probably get 4 or maybe even 5 pretty decent pedals for £150. Danelectro do some really cheap ones, i remember i tried a distortion pedal about 8 years ago called "grilled cheese" and it was a mental little thing, it was about £15 new at the time which i thought was amazingly cheap! Boss have some classics that a lot of pro players use and Digitech also do some nice pedals, there are dozens and dozens of pedal manufactures about though, but it might be something else to look at. :)

I want to be able to make distortion similar to Machine Head uses in majority of their albums.

Also the sort that A7X used in Waking The Fallen.

Thanks for replies btw.

a distortion pedal will be a better way to go for that. what kind of guitar and amp are you using? as voodoo said you can find a few stand alone effects fairly cheap.
and now for something completely different

I'm thinking of getting a multi effects pedal as well... here are some one's I've looked at:
a) Zoom G7.1ut
b) Line 6 Floorpod plus
c) Digitech RP500

The main criteria that I'm looking for are: flexibility, ie. enough effects to cover whatever I want, country to metal, and a decent integrated effects pedal, since I really can't afford a good wah wah pedal on top of this.

Out of the 3 mentioned, the rp500 is about £200, and the line 6 and zoom pedals are both around £150.

Any experience/advice for me?

ps. my budget is around £160, but could stretch to a bit more.
pps. Another option I've just found is the Vox ToneLab, for about £200
