Is this a good amp to start with? (beginner)

Hello, everyone

It's nice to finally join a good electric guitar forum and being this is going to be my first post, i'm in need of some opinions.

I'm going to be getting a epiphone les paul special II and i would like to pair it up with a fender junior pro. I'm mostly going to play classic rock (hendrix, sabbath, etc) and blues. I'm wondering if the fender will give me the sound that i want to achieve.

Also this is going to be my first guitar and amp, so if you have any other opinions that you would like to throw in please do, much help would be appreciated cheers.

Welcome to the forums, i'm glad you like the look of it!

I think you could find better than that for similar money (knowing the guitar and amp)! What is your budget roughly? And we'll make a few suggestions for you! :)

even if its that much for both you can do way better than the stuff you metnioned at the beginnign of the thread. get a peavey valvestate or a vox valvetroinx amp that will run you about $400 (us) and take the rest and find a good guitar.
and now for something completely different

Ok

Provided that is for guitar and amp look at the amps Monwo has suggested and maybe a Fender Blues Junior (you'd probably have to put an overdrive pedal through it to get rockier tones) but that might be a little expensive unless you buy second hand!

If it's for a guitar as well, look into something secondhand preferably of course! maybe a Fender Lonestar or Tex Mex strats, they'll do blues really nicely and have a humbucker at the bridge for a bit more oomph with stuff like sabbath!

I really like Ibanez' bluesey tone! Not what the guitar is really aimed at but i think they have a nice plump tone for blues plus they can do rock and metal easy :) With Ibanez you also have a greater choice because of the ammount of guitars they churn out at affordable levels! Maybe an RG 350 EX or RG 370 DX or if you could find a second hand one then an RG 1570 is an excellent guitar!

If you're planning on spending that sorta money on just an amp, you have quite a lot of choice for a nice wide range to be honest!

Well now we have all the facts! I've suggested a couple of things to try, but always a gem of advice is to get into a shop and try out a bunch of them and see how you feel about it all! It's daunting if you can't play guitar well to go into a shop where it seems everyone is thinking you're crap, but the staff should be willing to demo guitars and amps and their available sounds and capabilities! And it's up to you to have a little look at the guitars for yourself, see what's comfy and what you like the look of! Avoid scrappy edges, poor paint jobs and wonky parts! That's a sign of a cheap nasty guitar! If it looks solid and feels solid it's probably ok :)

hey juice the epi LP II you mentioned is a total piece of crap DO NOT wate your cash on that. if you poke around some of the posts here you'll see many recommendations for guitars. your best bet as always is to try some out for yourself. our tastes may not be yours and i hate to have anyone come back and say dude that guitar you told me to get sucks. so checkout your options and go from there.

Hello, monwobobbo

yes i just cameback from a music store called long & mcquade here in vancouver,bc.
I must say the tex mex strat (jimmy vaughn edition) was a really good sounding guitar. I got the salesperson to help me demo a few and i feel in love with it instantly but not with the price lol.

The fender blues junior was a pretty nice sounding amp as well but it was about $585.00 canadian. I also tried a marshall MG series amp but i was disappointed with the sound compared to a tube amp

Its true when you say everyone is going to have a different opinion on the guitars. The salesman said i was on the right track though with the tex mex strat and lonestar. i preferred the tex mex though, definitely a nice sounding guitar.

Cool! That's exactly what you needed to do :) Now you just have to whittle it down to what it is you want, by all means expand on this stuff, Fender aren't the only people who make good guitars in that style (although they started it of course) Go back a few times and ask what alternatives they have etc! You might find something you like even more!

I've often impulse bought really expensive guitars without thinking to myself "what else could i get for that money?"! Luckily i haven't regretted any of them (just been annoyed i couldn't buy even more guitars) but logically thinking it's best to have a good browse and let ideas come and go until you get one that feels more gut instinct.. or something like that anyway :)

check out this site:

www.rondomusic.com

they have high quality guitars for very cheap. They're not namebrands but if you don't care about that, you'll score a great guitar for cheap.

I'll go on a whim and suggest a tube amp such as the peavey valveking for the amp. I don't know what kind of venues you play or if it's just a bedroom practice thing, but the vk 112 is suited for both bedroom practice and small to moderate gigs. You can buy a 2x12 cabinet later down the road if it's not loud enough (but at 50 watts of tube power it can get REALLY loud.) it's suited for anything from jazz to blues to hard rock to classic metal.

I'd recommend spending more on the amp as I believe that it is the greatest contributor to your overall sound. The agile guitars (from the site i mentioned earlier) cost around $200 (us dollars) for a nice one and the valveking 112 new is $420 (us dollars). so assuming the budget is $870us you'll still have $250us leftover to use on pedals or beer and have a great guitar and amp. ;)

Jmo but tube amps have the best sound and if you spend the extra cash for one, you won't have to upgrade for quite a while.
