Learning guitar 101; How I did it

Greetings fellow guitar lovers :D

Since buying my first guitar in Sep 2008 I've been taking weekly lessons. I had no idea what to expect when I started or how quickly or slowly I'd progress. There was no real indication anywhere how others were learning, what others were learning or how easy or difficult the instrument was to learn to play.

So I've recently put together a blog detailing how I got on from my very first lesson in Oct 08...

Click on linky here >>> Guitar Diary of Rampant <<<

The main reason I started this was to document how I was getting on - mainly for myself - but it struck me this might be a useful source of info for other beginners like me as well as those considering taking up the guitar and even those that teach!

Suffice to say it is now up to date - all 15 weeks of it (Jan 08). And I shall endeavour to keep it updated every week for as long as I'm keeping up my guitar playing.

Happy reading

Please feel free to add comments either in the blog or in this thread.

Ha Ha at jimbob.

Play and sing at the same time?

No chance matey.

Although I might start trying it with Should I Stay or Should I Go.

Karma is still not quite right mainly due to not striking barre chords quickly or cleanly enough - but good song to practice that with. Again, Should I Stay... should be another one to improve barre chording.

Well done mate! Those part barred/barred chords will come together! I don't remember any 2 different days when one i couldn't play them and the next it was like I'd always been able to, they kind of ironed out mostly for me over a few months and over the following 6 months became pretty much perfect, and there does come a point where your fingers get so agile that it takes only a few hours to get a completely new shape learned to a high standard! (except augmented chords which are effectively backwards and confused the hell out of me for ages) :)
Guitars:
PRS CU 22 R/W neck | Organic Classic | Heritage H-150 | Fender Eric Clapton Strat | Fender Deluxe Ash strat, scalloped | 2001 USA std Telecaster | 2008 USA std Telecaster | 1996 Gibson Les Paul standard | PRS Santana SE | Maverick X1 | Epiphone SG | Freshman FA400J

Amps:
Orange Rockerverb 50 | Mesa Boogie Electradyne | Traynor YCV40T | VOX AD60VT | Fender Pro 185 | Zoom Fire 15

Thanks chap

The barre chords are certainly improving. Slowly, yeah, but going the right direction.

There's certainly a method to sensei's lesson plan... I used to think that Stuck in the Middle With You was insanely fast, but having moved to even faster stuff I can see that my fingers are now faster and more capable and accurate than they were, say 4 months ago :-)

My 1 remaining issue is alternate picking on Folsom Prison Blues - concentrating on both hands at the same time brings me to a total brick wall - dead in the water. It's frustrating to be sailing through the songs so fast 1 day and then end up effectively dead-ended the next!!!

It won't be long before you can alternate pick without looking at your right hand. At first it's hard to know where the strings are and not accidently pick the wrong one. In time it will be second nature to you. :D

Keep working at it... I shall be reading your updated blog later on B)
