Hey dudes

Just wondering whether anyone is reading this blog...

Doesn't matter if there is or if there isn't... I'm mainly writing this for my own record - kinda like a diary :)

If there are any readers, I should be graterful if you would comment on whether this is useful stuff here or whether it's just out of idle curiosity. Either comment in this thread or in the blog itself...

Many thankingz

I hadn't read it for a while! But i just went through your last 2 entries which is where i last read :D

It's cool you're starting to bend as well! That will really help you to shape notes more interestingly! Then you can master the art of sticking together slides and bends! It's nice to pull that off.. it feels kinda slinky XD

As for big stretching exercises! Use your imagination a little, the fretboard is your friend when it comes to choices of position to adjust how big you want your stretches to be! For example, i often fret 1,3,5 in order on each string then back down again.. up again.. down again.. slowly slowly.. then faster.. then faster, but always remember once you start fluffing notes regularly you need to slow down a little!.. then I'll do maybe 6,9,12 or 7,10,13 which is a slightly bigger stretch and one which i don't often find myself using during playing.. but i figure it helps dexterity :)

To help even more (and with co-ordination) try string skipping with similar patterns.. sooo..

--------------------------------5-----1-------------------------------
--------------------------3-----------------3-------------------------
--------------------1----------------------------5--------------------
--------------5----------------------------------------1--------------
-------3-----------------------------------------------------3--------
-1-----------------------------------------------------------------5--

Thats just a very simple but still different way of doing it, and you will find the co-ordination needed for that is a lot more intense than for 3 notes per string :) No gain without pain n all that ;)

Hope that helps Mark!

Ohh... and i look out of curiosity! I never had lessons until i was fairly well self taught! So it's interesting to see how a tutor teaches, like what is best taught in which order if you know what i mean :)

Do you still play some of the first stuff you learned Mark or do you find it a little tedious now in comparison with playing more challenging pieces?

Hi Matey

Yes, I still play stuff from the beginning, as most of the songs are still fun to play and are still challenging enough in their own way. For example, Importance of Being Idle is a good tune with nice idiosyncrasies. It's also satisfying to play something reasonably accurately!

I can see that some stuff may become tedious after you've completely mastered them, but being honest, how long does it take to actually master any of the songs on my learning list??? Sure I can play some of the stuff quite well, to the point of feeling I've actually nailed it, but I'm also a self-critical student. (partly from being an aviator, with many years of training and the never-ending assessment and appraisal)

Yeah i just wondered, i know a lot of the very first few things i learned like, puff the magic dragon, mull of kintyre, smells like teen spirit and what not i never play now as i find them incredibly mind numbing! But some of the stuff I'd learned after maybe 6 months i still play today! Much like the theme tune to Rainbow! Which i can play much better now but was still one of my first widdly pieces to get to grips with!

I'm impressed that you managed to get both "puff the magic dragon" and "smells like teen spirit" into the same sentence.

I think I'm lucky that I found a sensei that "doesn't mess around with rubbish songs" on the same day as buying my first guitar :)
